"My Pastor Don’t Allow me to Run The Music Dept. Instead He Make Decisions Behind My back and Don’t Discuss Them With Me?"
Below is a question submitted by Sister L. who wishes to remain anonymous.  Somewhere USA. Her question is one that many musicians have death with at one time or another. Prayfully read the comments posted.

I want to be anonymous, but am interested in what to do when a musician is of no regard because of not being "in, or included" with the minister and his family, not knowing what hymns will be played untill the service arrives, and not being asked for musical advice, yet would be very much missed by the congregation if leaving the church.        Lady L

Dear Lady L,

You are in a place or situation that many musicians have faced before. There are two areas of concern that have to be addressed. First of all, what is your reason or focus for serving

What Would It Take For YOU to Master Gospel Music?
I’ve educated musicians for many years. Here in my Atlanta studio, I teach students with different levels of ability. Many of my students have taken lessons for years and invested lots of money in instructional products such as books, CD’s DVD’s etc. What’s amazing to me is that you can take two students with the same level of training, teach them exactly the same stuff and end up with very different results. I tend to go all out with my students by creating a personal curriculum based on the individuals need. What resources have worked best for ...

"Show Me The Money” Are Musicians Getting Over?
I talk to musicians from every walk of life. When it comes down to being paid they don’t always play by the rules. The salary negotiations between musicians and churches can get a bit nasty. In this season of my life serving a ministry is not only about the money. It's about providing a spiritual covering for my family and making sure that I’m playing in a church where I was called by God. Often times, we go through so much unnecessary drama, moving from one church to another dealing with the same issues over and over again for ...

"Why Is Homosexuality So Prevalent Among Church Musicians?"
I recently received a request for a new blog topic from Nicholas – (Somewhere USA.) Because of the sensitive nature of this subject, I wasn’t sure whether or not it should be posted. However, this is a topic that needs to be addressed.

I spoke with my pastor, Elder Clifford McGrady here in the metro Atlanta Area and this is what he had to say:

Do Female Musicians Get The Respect They Deserve?
Hey Greg! I would like to share that in my experience as a female musician. We do not get the respect from male musicians. I find that women musicians are out numbered in the church. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of awesome musicians out there that you sit and listen in awe. We do have talented male musicians but there are some that want to crowd and run you off the keyboard so they can play to show what they can do. This makes you feel uncomfortable and inadequate. ...

“Musicians Behaving Badly - Part 1”
I recently got an email from a young lady in the great state of Texas. She shared a dilemma with me that is more common among church musicians than we may think. Up until now I have only posted scenarios that I have encountered during my career as a musician. Today I want the GiftedPlayer family to help a “sista” out. Remember this is a Christian community and God is watching. If you have a blog topic that you want to share with others please email me at greghannon@giftedplayer.com. Below is her story, please comment and advise: ...

Pastors and Musicians “Isn’t it Strange”
Back when I was an undergraduate at Alabama "A & M" in Huntsville, I would often go home to Montgomery during my breaks and my musician buddies would have churches lined up for me to play for on Sundays. It was around 9:00 A.M. on a Sunday morning when I was preparing to return to school and I got a phone call from a pastor that I didn’t know. He was stressing out because his musician had just quit the night before. He pleaded with me to play for his 11:00 service. By this time it was 9:30 and I wanted to get an early start back to school. He kept insisting that he needed my help so I just gave in. Reluctantly, I agreed but with the stipulation that I absolutely will have to get back on the road by 12:30. Service started. The deacons prayed a long devotional service and sang about 12 songs. Maybe I’m exaggerating a little but

When Musicians Walk Out During The Message
I received a phone call several months ago from a pastor of a very prominent church in my area. He asked me if I could fill-in for two Sundays because his organist was going on vacation. There was no schedule conflict on my part so I agreed. As I prepared for service I played a medley of worship songs with the bass guitarist and the drummer, who by the way were excellent musicians. We continued to play during the service up until the pastor came to the pulpit to deliver his message. After about 10 minutes into his sermon, I ...

Are All Gospel Music Teachers Created Equal?
My desire to play gospel music started at the early age of 6 years old. At that time we couldn’t afford a piano. It wasn’t until I was in the seventh grade that my mother purchased my first instrument. It was a Wurlitzer spinet. I can’t event began to tell you how excited I was. I thought all my problems were over. She signed me up with the city’s most well known piano teacher and in my opinion a gospel music legend. I was on my way to becoming the next gospel ...
